A Game of Sorts and the Conspiring of a Penguin
« Thread Started on Oct 20, 2005, 10:26pm »

Whether it was a sign or not that all my former work happened to die, I decided to make some random post in the Roleplaying section. I've been wanting to roleplay for awhile and no other forum seems to fit well, so I am doing it here. Mostly for it's randomness. I doubt people will respond to this much, or at all, and I don't care. The point is I will have some amusement doing this.

The room was dimly lit and musty, much like an old rarely-used library. The shelves were full and unorganized. The furniture was old and worn, but still comfortable and pleasant. The floor was wood and decently clean. The walls were cream-coloured and decorated with odd paintings and pictures and random signs. The random maniacs in corners were talking to themselves or rocking back and forth. Amarië sat off to the west-end of the room. There was a table in front of her that had on it a board and various little tiles on the board. Across from her sat her opponent.

Amarië was very involved in the game she happened to be playing. It was a game that took a lot of concentration in general, but this particular game was a bit more challenging. This was due to her opponent. He was of high intellect, very cunning. He was also, however, a bit of a jokster and liked to have a good time. This was all part of the reason why they happened to be in this particular room. The other part of the reason is still unknown.

The game they were playing was called Scrawl. It is very similar to the well-known game called Scrabble. There are few differences. Instead of only having seven letters at a time, you have twelve. The board is reasonably bigger. The way to win the game is not determined by points that are on the board, but rather levels of words. There are several levels of words in which each level receives a different number of points. Diagonal words are not allowed, as in Scrabble.

Amarië studied her tiles, then looked at the board, then into the beady eyes of her opponent.

'..meep?'

'Yes, yes, I know.. Give me a minute, this takes time and thought, which takes a lot of one to do the other for me at some times,' Amarië responded.

The penguin squirmed around in his seat to get himself more comfortable. Amarië was still unsure of what to do so she returned a W and a B back into the bag and passed her turn.

'Meep meep,' teased the penguin.

'Meep. Meep-meep meep.'

The penguin ignored this comment. Taking a moment to look down at his letters, he made some soft penguin noises to himself. Majestically, for a penguin that is, he then placed out the word 'subervious' on the board. This ran off of the word 'abysmal', which happened to be a level three word, thus worth six points.

'Subervious?'

'Meep.'

'...?'

'..'

'That is not a real word, my friend..' Amarië said, quite sure of herself.

'Meep... meep-meep.'

'Blast.. I challenge you!' Amarië started to head for the dictionary on the corner shelf of the room, but the penguin got ahead of her, getting it himself.

Amarië took this moment to try to figure out how her penguin friend came up with that word, if he had anything up his sleeve, and if he was truly corrupt or just generally insane. Quickly coming to her own conclusions, she then scanned the room to see if any of the other maniacs had made any sort of movement. They tended to keep to themselves, mostly only interacting with her to warn her of a random piece of shrapnel flying towards her or to ask her for a piece of gum. They all happened to be off in their own corners or nooks rocking back and forth. This was normal. What was not normal is how quiet it was, and why her penguin friend was taking so long to bring back the dictionary.

Right as she was starting to get curious, the penguin was back at the table with the dictionary. Amarië flipped through until she reached where the word would be.

'Subervious. The word for the characteristics portrayed by a certain species of slug, called Suberan, that inhabits certain regions of the Atlantic Ocean,' quoted Amarië, '....uhm. Yes, nice forgery there. It almost looks like type.. too bad it's in blue ink. Really, don't you have a black pen?'

The penguin started to explain that the definition was added by the original authors of the dictionary, and the dictionary in fact was their original copy in which they edited and revised. Amarië thought about this.

'Are you sure?' she inquired, looking into his eyes.

'Meep.'

'Why is the ink still wet?'

'Meep, meep meep meepers-meep meep.'

'Huh.' Amarië tilted her head. 'If you say so. That is... sort of.. a name, so that would make it two points, eh?'

'Meep-meep.'

The score for the game was kept in which ever way the players chose to keep it. Amarië happened to be keeping it on a small notepad to her right. She hadn't bothered to add up the scores yet, because she would rather not know who was ahead until the game was over. This was how most of the players of the game liked it. It has been played by few and most likely will not be played much any more after this certain game. This is because very soon the entire game will cease to physically exist.
