Sleet heard the evening gong sounding, releasing the slaves from a harsh day of work. Walking back to the city, next to the long line of slaves, she made sure no one fell out of line. A weary german shepard was slaying out of the line. Sleet was about to get onto him when she heard the lion cub's mother giving out a cry somewhere ahead of them over the loss of her baby. A few nobles started to complain about it. Sleet was too far back to go rushing up there and leave her post, so she kept walking the pace of the line.

'You,' Sleet said to the dog, 'Keep up!'

He immediately quickened his walk and did not lag anymore.

The sun was setting over the city, giving it a unique look from the rest of the day, still sparkling, as always. A glint hit Sleet's eyes, several times, momentarily blinding her. Sleet turned away, but now saw that she was drawing nearer to the lion cub, and could see it and where it had fallen. She would feel terrible if she were to have one of her own cubs decease like that, but alas, she could not risk feeling sorry for those as such, and continued walking.

Narien smiled to herself, that falcon she had been following had ordered her to return to the enslaved, yet had left her on her own to do it. Mabey it was because he was one of the nobles who was bent towards the idea of a revolt. Or mabey he was just stupid. Narien didn't care much, the fact was, she was left free for the moment.

Narien turned around and detached the cart from her backside and clopped down the road until she reached the building she had reached earlier. She knocked timidly on the door and the bear from earlier opened it to her. This is the one whom had sent to note to her.

"Hello Narien." He said with a refined accent which surprised her. "We've been waiting for you." He said as he opened the door further and ushered her in.

Inside the room there were many various enslaved animals who undoubtedly had been snuck away like herself and brought to this place. She noticed that the satyrs who had delivered the message to her were there as well as the falcon whom she had been following all day.

"What is all this?" She asked with wide eyes roaming the room. The falcon spoke up and nodded towards her. "You have been chosen to join the underground along with us. I'm Aleko. One of the few nobles who have joined with you enslaved." He said the word with a non-pulsed compassion, it seemed that he felt all of them were on the same level. Narien nodded her head back at him and smiled. "I'm glad you have made that descision then!"

One of the little satyrs stepped forward and lifted his hoof towards her. "This is our symbol, it was already on most of us when we were captured so we adopted it for the underground." Narien looked down at the underside of his hoof. It had a mesh marking in the shape of an f. "It stands for free now, does it not?" She asked quietly as the satyr put his hoof back down and stepped back. The entire room nodded and murmured in accord.

The bear stepped up again and beconed for Narien to take a place by the others, she did so finding a comfortable position as the bear began to talk.

"I am Carlone for those of you whom have just come. This organization is here for one purpose and one purpose only. To rid Erae of the monarch that haunts our very existence. To do that we must defeat the heart." Carlone's tone was serene, yet it struck terror in the hearts of every one of those in the room. "The heart is something of great worth to the monarch. He cannot stay without it. If you are of stout heart and courageous action then you will aid us. If not...." His voice trailed off for a moment. "If not, we shall surely perish in slavery here." He finished.

"But if we destroy the heart, then we will all perish!" Narien said in a slightly distressed tone. Carlone looked at her and shook his head, he looked around the room at the new faces and spoke clearly so all could hear him. "The heart is not what keeps us alive. We are the ones keeping us alive, that is simply a lie that they tell the enslaved too keep them from destroying it." He said to the surprised faces staring at him in astonishment. "The heart is the only thing with enough power to keep the monarch alive. It draws its power from us, sucking the energy and life out of any creature that so much as touches these streets of Erae. Its veins are threaded throughout every emerald paved road, over every diamond bridge, within every crystal, amethyst, and ruby tower. The only untouched place is the only place we can't get to right now, outside of these steel walls, but not for long." He said with resolve in his voice. "First we must spread the word to every enslaved, but be wary of whom you speak with, the monarch's spies are everywhere. This revolt will come soon, I can feel it in my bones. Tonight, we are still nothing, but soon... Soon! We will be our own selves without anyone to tell us when to eat, where to carry things, or who we are! Soon! We will be free!" He said with conviction, stirring emotions in everyone present.

After everything he said had sunken in, Narien stepped forward to ask the most prominent question on everyones minds. "What do we do from here? Right now, do we go on working?" "Yes, for now. Take the sign upon your hoof and pass the note you were given along to others. Aleko will make sure that they make it here safely, if you cannot be here then come another night. It is not worth your life, not yet."

Narien thought back on those words as she slipped unoticed into the end of the enslaved line going back to their sleeping quarters. As she walked into the room that she shared with many other animals she wondered who she really could trust. With an inward nod she headed down the hall towards the room in which she knew the black panther slept. She walked over and dropped the note as she passed, pretending she was looking for something before leaving the room. As she went back to her room and picked her way through the other animals she wondered if the panther had understood what she had done, she fell asleep wondering.

Sleet saw the falcon flying past. The word of the rebellion had spread to her, also. She did not know what to do. Surely there would be those who remained loyal to the Monarch, but if all the slaves revolted, many of the nobles would revolt too to save their own lives. But, then again, what if the revolt failed? and she joined, and her title, or even worse, her life was taken from her. Sleet paced up and down the line of slaves left to return to their quarters, still trying to decide what to do.

What if the monarch found out about the meeting? what if it knew? what if it could see? Sleet had questions racing through her mind. Only about one hundred strides from the very door, she saw an occasional slave, or even noble slip in. What if she told the Monarch and gained even higher status? Everything could be lost for them all with just a few simple words, and Sleet could be in the Monarch's favour, if it was possible for anyone to get in the Monarch's favour that is...

Sleet, after a few more pacing-back-and-forths, walked quietly towards the door. The line of slaves waiting to go back had dwindled, so Sleet left them to the rest of the nobles. A bear opened the door and asked her what she would wanted, hiding whatever was inside.

'I have been sent by Aleko,' Sleet said, though she had barely spoken with the falcon, 'I am Sleet.'

'Sleet? Well, I am glad to have you,' the bear said, allowing her to pass. Sleet walked inside, and set herself along the edge of the group. A few eyed her oddly, unsure if she should be trustworthy, for she did not always treat slaves with the kindest care, but it was something she had to do to keep her status.

Sleet listened to what the bear had to say, and the comments about it. She could remember the heart, though it seemed to have a great power illuminating off of it. It was of discomfort to her to be around it, she often felt weaker, as if the closer she got, the more power it took. That was it, of course! The heart, but why could not anyone see it before? when the monarch first started it's e-vile ways, why could no one stop it? Something seemed wrong, but Sleet shrugged it off, as the meeting seemed to be coming to a close. Everyone made their way out one by one to keep it down. A few animals still seemed untrustworthy of Sleet; she could see it in their eyes, when they walked past.

Sleet walked along the dark streets; she did not feel like going back to her quarters. She could not sleep every night, and just took guard around the city, though she wondered how much longer she would be taking guard without doing something that would risk her life.

Rebnevon sat in the shadows at the back of the room, watching silently as the secret meeting progressed. The fools! he thought to himself, they can never defeat the heart and thus destroy the Monarch! They are placing their lives at risk for nothing! He thought the several nobles there equally foolish for joining ranks with mere slaves. And yet he understood the desire for power better than he understood most anything else. At least one of the nobles at this meeting was there solely for himself. Or perhaps herself. Rebnevon scanned the group, and mentally assessed each noble present. Perhaps the falcon Rynsian was spying on the assembly to report to the monarch. Why else would he go by an assumed name? From the little Rebnevon had seen of Ryn, he knew that Ryn was a noble after his own heart- scheming and deadly. Maybe Sleet was thinking of betrayal as well. She had a ponderous look about her.

For that matter, what should Rebnevon do? If another noble betrayed the cause before he did, then all was lost. Rebnevon would appear to be a rebel, and would most likely be executed. He could claim to have been watching the group carefully, and not to have deemed it appropriate to have reported the movement to the Monarch at that time. But the Monarch was so suspicious and unpredictable that there was no guarantee that such a plan would succeed.

Perhaps the Monarch already knew of the secret meeting. What then? It was possible, the Monarch often surprised even those who knew it best, if one could know the Monarch at all. Many times before, it had astonished its spies by telling them about the information they had been about to report to it.

Or maybe Rebnevon should join the rebel group. There was potential there, among the nobles, at least. Rebnevon could work his way into the group, and eventually become its leader. One day he might even become a Monarch himself. Or he could work his way into the group and betray it. Either way would be beneficial to him and ruinous for the rest. He liked that. Either way he could further himself, gain more prestige, obtain more power...

A new plan came to him, more devious than any he had previously concocted. He did not mind killing and betraying others for his own gain. In fact, he had done so many a time. If he betrayed this rebel group, it would not be the first time he had reported rebels to the Monarch. Whether his previous victims had actually been rebellious was another issue. A foolish noble weasel had once gone so far as to insult Rebnevon, saying that he was merely a slithering servant of the Monarch. Rebnevon had shown him that he was no one's servant.

Maybe, just maybe, he could win several of the nobles at the meeting over to his side. Not the soft ones, the ones who were kind to the slaves, but Rynsian, and perhaps one or two others, those that showed potential. They could worm their way into the heart of the rebel group, and, when the time was right, betray them. By showing themselves as worthy subjects, they might then put the Monarch off their trail. They could wait to betray the rebels until the vital point had been reached- and then they could defeat the monarch themselves, and impose a new order. Rebnevon did not favor working with others, but he would need them, at least for a while. He might dispose of the others, but he hoped to be able to train Rynsian well, for someday he might become Rebnevon's second in command. It was a plausible plan. It relied on much watching and waiting, a secret whisper here and a sly hint dropped there. Much like what this group was trying to do, except this operation would be conducted by the master himself.

Rebnevon left the meeting to watch and wait. He always kept a close watch on his surroundings, but now his watch was trebled, and he meant to keep rather more than an eye on the nobles he intended to help him in his cause, Rynsian in particular. He could not risk their betrayal of the rebel group before he had them in his counsel.

Aistre padded silently along the nearly-deserted street. She looked for the door, and finding it, knocked. The was opened by a bear. Before the bear could speak, Aistre said quickly, "Please, let me in. I am the Enslaved dog that fought for the lion cub today, even if it did little good." The bear regarded her for a moment or two, then asked slowly," Who told you of this meeting?" Aistre looked down. "I heard anothe animal talking. I wishede to come and help." After another minute, theh bear stood aside to let her in.

The meeting had already begun when Aistre entred. She slipped quietly into the back and listened.

Finally, finally! Here are animals that share my passion! she thought, as the evening unfolded. But it seems alll they want to do iswait, she realized. Then a unicorn stepped forward and voiced Aistre's thought. "What do we do from here? Right now, do we go on working?" "Yes, for now. Take the sign upon your hoof and pass the note you were given along to others. Aleko will make sure that they make it here safely, if you cannot be here then come another night. Makira heard the centaur walk by her straw pallet and felt the note drop but kept her eyes closed until the sound of her hooves had faded away. Then the panther raised her head and soundlessly pulled the paper to her. In the dim light, Makira could just make out the small letters informing her of a rebellion growing in secret. She couldn’t help but grimly smile as she read it. No one truly knew what she did each night, did they?

The panther looked around the large room filled with slaves to make sure everyone was sleeping soundly. After several long moments she seemed content and quietly stole from her corner. With the paper in her mouth she crept through the slumbering animals. All were exhausted as usual from their hard days work. None awoke as she slipped out the doorway. A torch flickered brightly in the hall of the slave’s quarters. Makira leaped on the wall, meaning to drop the note into the fire. Suddenly, she froze and thought for moment before falling back to the floor. She padded back into the room and placed the note beside a snoring wolf. He had shown himself to be intelligent and Makira knew he had a fierce hatred of the Monarch.

Now she hurried down the hall to the back of the building. There was a window just barely large enough for her to fit through. She held her breath as she listened intently to the happenings on the other side of the wall. The soft footfalls of the guard came towards the window then went passed it. Makira hurriedly leaped through the window and dropped to the ground outside. Her spying session for the night had begun.

Sleet slipped along the shadows of the city, the moon still left it fairly light. She spotted a black panther jumping out of a window and slinking quietly off. Sleet, having nothing better to do decided to follow her, for she seemed to be heading in the opposite way of her quarters, if Sleet remembered correctly. For a few moments the panther seemed to pay no attention to Sleet, for Sleet stayed a fair distance behind her and was well hidden in the shadow.

Sleet stepped out of the shadows, in hopes that the panther would not be too alarmed and not run off, causing a scene, getting them both, if not just the panther, in trouble. The panther saw Sleet and tried to make a break for it as quietly as possible. She seemed to know the streets fairly enough, though she had cornered herself between a wall and Sleet. 'You! You should be in your quarters!' Sleet said, not too loud, not to disturb any peace, yet not too quiet, in case some other noble or slave had followed them.

'Yes, right away,' the panther said, trying to get by Sleet, who blocked her way every time she turned a different way to get by.

'Makira, correct? By your being out, I assume you have received the message,' Sleet said, cornering Makira against the wall, whispering it to her, so soft, Makira could barely hear it.

'Yes, and I have passed it along, also,' Makira responded, hesitant of what her answer should be, 'and are you a noble who has joined?'

'Indeed, but be wary of who you tell and respond to, for some nobles could be out to tell the Monarch of it just to get higher in the rankings... slaves, too,' Sleet whispered, 'If you wish to get back to your quarters, I can assist you, for it is less mysterious a noble being out on watch, than a slave wandering around. For unless it is urgent business, it would be too risky to go wandering around at night... yet...'

(( I am so sorry to you all, my wonderful friends. I missed so much on this RP and the hobbit matchmaking because of a lot of travelling I had to do, concerning some important matters. Then, just as I was going to catch up on the RPs, my computer got a virus.... I am so sorry, but I'm here now and I'm posting and you can't stop me!!))

Papyra had been on watch all night, specifically watching a couple of wandering enslaved animals, her emerald eyes glittering maliciously in the darkness. She silently noted everything she saw, remembering it to tell the Monarch the next chance she got. Half of her was hoping something would happen so she could have something interesting to report and impress the Monarch by correcting everything.

She slithered across jewel incrusted bridges that connected the beautiful towers together tasting the air for anything unusual. Papyra, being a serpant, was deaf and so relied heavily on her enhanced sense of taste and eyesight.

There was something odd about tonight, she mused. She couldn't quite figure out what it was, but the enslaved animals seemed too quiet.

Slowly, she slithered down a stony staircase and onto the streets, gliding across the floor and into the shadows where she was unseen.

It glared out into the city. The slaves were gathering, disappearing, reappearing. Not the orthodox paths. Fools. Did they think they could escape the glare of the Monarch? Surely not. If this went on any longer, then it would see to it that they ceased. It didn’t want any uprising. No, keep them ignorant. That’s what was needed. Ignorance. They would need more work. No time for them to think about why they were doing what they were. More work. But what would the great Lord command of them? They already were doing its e-vile bidding. The tunnels were being built at an increasing rate every day; yes, they were coming along nicely. Soon, soon they would be large enough to transport something… valuable. Something, precious to the population of Erae, and something the Monarch planned to take. The children would carry the water. The rest would carry the burden of the tunnels work. There was but one place where they were not digging. The barren lands of Erae, where the terrain is less lovely. Would suspicion arise? Perhaps not. In this fashion the monarch could get to the heart quickly before any uprising.

“BRING ME REBNEVON!” the Monarch said in a piercing scream.

“Y-yes, milord!” the third servant squeaked loudly.

“Do you dare raise your voice to me?! Who do you think you are, servant? You may be higher than the slaves below but you are still nothing more than a spec of dirt in my power. Do not think that you are worth anything, slave.” It bellowed furiously. It brought the Monarch twisted pleasure to declare how far below the noble was below it.

“Yes lord!” the rodent-y servant squeaked in a whisper, “I’ll bring Rebnevon.”

“Make haste, then!” it barked at the noble.

Yes, Rebnevon was faithful to the Monarch, and wise, he would be able to carry the message.

'But if it something you must do, then you very well may, but I fear I must depart now. For you never know who could be listening,' Sleet said, bowing her head a bit, and Makira did the same. A gesture that wouldn't be done of others were present.

Sleet saw nothing else for her to do that night. Walking down the halls of the slave quarters, making sure everything is in check, nightly rounds she often made, unable to sleep early at night. There were nightly guards that stood watch, who had gotten used to seeing her. She thought she saw a few papers being passed around and tucked away as she passed, but 'twas only a glimpse. She had to admit, they did seem well organized, though she wondered if they would succeed. Didn't seem very likely. But she had to give them credit for what they had done.

She left the slave quarters and went to her own dwelling. She was unable to sleep, her mind on thoughts were replaying the meeting and other occurrences during her day.

Makira heard the tiger following her and knew it would be disastrous for them both if they were found together in this spot. The panther quickly darted down the streets that she had learned well in her nightly excursions, and the tiger followed. At last, Makira reached her destination and turned to meet Sleet. She had seen in the Noble’s eyes that afternoon that she hated the oppression of the Monarch. It could have just been a lure for Makira, but she was willing to take that risk.

'You! You should be in your quarters!' Sleet said quietly.

'Yes, right away,' replied Makira. Perhaps the guard didn’t wish to talk. She tried to get by Sleet but the tiger blocker her.

'Makira, correct? By your being out, I assume you have received the message,' Sleet whispered.

'Yes, and I have passed it along, also,' Makira responded after a moments hesitation, 'and are you a noble who has joined?'

For you never know who could be listening,' Sleet said.

The tiger bowed her head a bit and Makira readily returned it. With that Sleet silently walked away. Makira watched her retreating form for a few minutes and then slipped from the wall. Though Sleet’s caution was very true, Makira knew that every bit of information she could find would give the Enslaved’s cause a greater chance of success.

Makira was now in one of the back streets of Erae. They were seldom guarded or used by the Nobles or Enslaved, but they were dangerous just the same. It was where the criminals and other immoral animals of the city hid. With her senses on full alert, Makira hurried through the darkness. No sound did she hear and no one did she meet as she walked. With a quiet sigh of relief she turned from the feared road and cut through an alleyway to find herself closer to her destination, the section of Erae where the Nobles lived.

Sleet had managed to drift off into the night but was soon awoken to the loud gong right before sunrise which told everyone it was time to get up and back to work. She walked out into the hall, and wrinkled her nose in disgust as some of the other nobles complained about how it was too early. They didn't pay attention to her and, after a stretch, went out to order the slaves around.

The slaves were not tired this morning. It seems as if they had slept well, thinking they would be free one day. Sleet was still a bit skeptical of it all. Everything, from the nobles to the slaves. She could only wait and do what she could, wonder what the Monarch would do it found out about the rebellion. Or if it knew already. If they faltered, it could very well destroy them all, or one would think. But the animals did not dare think about the Monarch too much. Some said that it could read minds. It was a small rumour that few believed, yet no one seemed to think about it.

A few days went past until the next meeting. There were at least three times as many slaves attending that one, and it seemed even fewer nobles than before. No one seemed to notice that. Once again, the heart was brought up. No one was certain if this was the truth, that is only what the smartest of the slaves had come up with and believe is true. Sleet had her own conclusions of this, based on what she had been told. Whenever she dared to venture close to it, she got the oddest feeling, and dared not go back for a few days.

There were surely libraries somewhere within the city which held records of the heart, how is was made, and when it was made. No one could rightly remember. But those places were closed to nobles, except those of extremely high ranking, and it seems as if even their number slowly had dwindled.

Sleet lied down in the back and waited for everyone else to settle down. The youngest and smallest sat in the front, then going up with size to the biggest animals of the bunch. And they all formed a horse shoe type shape around the bear. He cleared his throat and began to talk.

Nerves tensing, its eyes peered out over the gleaming city. A shudder went through its body, and the shadow of a thought entered its mind. A blink, after glaring out for what seemed an eternity and the thoughts became to intermingle with its keen observations. The time was drawing close.

'It has begun...' poisoned words spewed from its mouth, 'they deem they shall find me at unawares... catch me off my guard. The fools, they forget that there is no such thing. For ever and anon do I see them - their nervous glances, their thoughts of uprisal... nothing slips past me unnoticed.'

In its trumpet of arrogance, the Monarch acknowledged the likely possibility of a spy within its realm.

Rynsian... the fool. Keen eyes but dim-witted, he would be easily swayed. Nay, he was not a threat, but merely a vessel for information. Whether by his hand or not, his betrayal would lead to the downfall of the rebellion. He was wound tightly around the Monarch's will...

Rebnevon, however... was a different matter. Where was he? He had been summoned previously and as of yet had not appeared before the Monarch. This would displease the Monarch greatly... a subject with a mind of its own is not a subject, but a threat... it considered this. 'In what ways would my servants seek to supplant me? For so, I deem this a possibility.'

It let out a thoughtful sigh that echoed through the city as an angry shriek. The slaves paused for a moment, and shuddered as the noise passed.

It was but a moment after when the thought of fighting fire with fire was instilled in its mind.

'An infiltrator. Surely that is what I am dealing with, there should be no reason why I cannot infiltrate their little rebellion...' it thought.

'Such a heart-warming tale, really... the tortured and lowly use their courage to join together and overthrow the most powerful e-vile... good always triumphing over bad... Curse them. Curse them mightily so that they may bow before me in the end!' it bellowed the last chord. If the slaves wanted a thing to stop and shudder about, this cry of hatred surely was it.
